Visual schemata and visualization literacy
This is a collaborative project between SCIENCE lab and Purdue University HIVE lab. The aim of this project is to better understand the influences of visualization literacy on the performance of visual analysts and develop initial cognitive model to predict the performance of visual analysts. Eventually, the results of the current project could be incorporated into a comprehensive mathematical/computational cognitive model and a measurement tool of visualization literacy. Purdue will contribute the experiences in creating taxonomy of visualizations, development workforce for interactive visualization systems, and infrastructure to conduct a controlled lab experiment. SFU will contribute its expertise in cognitive science and experiences in conducting field studies in a more realistic environment. SFU's research will apply qualitative research methods in the context of theories of image schemas and mental representations.
